in africa, the two words i heard a dozen times each day were:
1) mzungu
2) wazungu
why? in swahili, "mzungu" means "white person." and, you guessed it, "wazungu" means "white people." pretty much all foreigners were regarded as white.
it was pretty futile trying to fit in in kenya and uganda, so i didn't bother trying. i was too light-skinned to be regarded as anywhere close to a local.
then i come to hong kong, thinking people will see me as just another canto bro, but nope. i am now too dark-skinned to be regarded as anywhere close to a local.
los angeles is next on my list, and i am pretty sure i will fit right in there.
fit right in with the latino population. como estas?
